Hanwha Aerospace has begun assembling a 'reusable technology demonstrator' to secure reusable space launch vehicle technology.
Key points
•Hanwha Aerospace begins development of reusable launch vehicle technology demonstrator
•Scheduled to verify vertical take-off and landing performance by 2028
•Core technology demonstration to secure launch cost competitiveness
Hanwha Aerospace is conducting research with the Korea Aerospace Research Institute (KARI) to secure core launch vehicle reusability technology by 2028. Domestic space companies, including Bitseronextech and Hanyang Engineering, are also participating in this project.
The reusable technology demonstrator measures 12.2m in height and 1.5m in diameter, and will be equipped with a multi-stage combustion cycle turbopump engine capable of adjusting thrust. The plan is to verify vertical take-off and landing performance during flight tests in 2028.
Reusable launch vehicle technology is essential for securing global space launch service competitiveness. Its importance is highlighted by SpaceX's Falcon 9, which significantly reduced launch costs per kilogram using this technology.
