Global independent consumer connectivity analytics firm Opensignal unveiled the world's first interactive map depicting real-world locations where smartphones are directly connecting to satellites via D2D services.
Key points
•Opensignal launches world’s first interactive D2D satellite map
•Map shows real-world locations of D2D smartphone connections
•Provides insights for partnerships and spectrum decisions
The Opensignal D2D Satellite Map, which updates monthly, shows locations where smartphones have connected to a D2D service since January 2026. This provides an independent view of where D2D is gaining traction globally, aiding decisions on partnerships and spectrum allocation.
President Mike Sandy highlighted that D2D technology is reshaping mobile coverage capabilities, enabling direct satellite connections from smartphones. The map offers insights into current adoption trends, which are crucial as the technology matures and expands beyond text messaging and emergency alerts to include voice and higher-speed data services.
While D2D services currently support limited functionalities due to constraints in spectrum availability and hardware standards, Opensignal expects to expand its analysis to cover performance metrics as these technologies evolve.
